Seasons of the Sea
Published in Hardcover by Pineapple Pr (March, 2001)
Authors: Jay Humphreys, Florida Sea Grant College, and Jim Wilson
Average review score:

A Book for All Seasons
True to its title, Seasons of the Sea explains the cycles of Florida sea life, season by season. It is written at the level of the layperson.

The book contains 6 chapters or sections as well as an introduction and an epilogue. It is 163 pages long, including a suggested reading list and an index. Each section covers a region of the Florida coast, starting with the northeast and ending at the panhandle. Each section is further divided into subsections that present what occurs along that coastal region in each of the four seasons. But the subsections also cover, in more detail, topics unique to each area. For example, the section on northeast Florida has a subsection titled "Thar She Blows!" that covers the annual migration of northern right whales to calve.

This book helped me solve the origin of a mysterious malady that afflicted me several times after kayaking in Mosquito Lagoon, part of Canaveral National Seashore. On those occasions, I had broken out in a red, itchy, stinging rash on several areas of my trunk. While reading the section on the southeast coast, I found out that this condition is called "swimmer's itch" and is caused by "minute jellyfish larvae that...produce toxins" and "can cling to human skin, especially when...trapped inside a bathing suit or wet suit."

Anyone interested in learning about life along the Florida coast should find this book fascinating. I did.

great little book
It's realy too bad that Ms. Myrick didn't write any more books. This little jewel is perfect for little boys. My son, age 4, loved it. Three little boys form a club while at the seashore by using the changing tide to send messages in a bottle.

A superbly written historical novel
Set in 1814 after Napoleon has abdicated as Emperor of the French, Richard Woodman's, The Shadow Of The Eagle, is a superbly written historical novel filled with intrigue and ruthless politics , from the Russian Tsar's delusions of grandeur to the naval forces of Great Britain pressing relentless war against America. The Shadow Of The Eagle is a very compelling, entertaining, action/adventure read from first page to last.

The Shark Chronicles: A Scientist Tracks the Consummate Predator
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (04 September, 2002)
Authors: John Musick and Beverly McMillan
Average review score:

Fascinating Look into the World of the Shark
The tales of a shark researcher and his colleagues and friends serve as the vehicle for instructing the reader on the fascinating world of the Shark. This narrative trick works in this book much better than I had anticipated, since the vignettes presented quickly depart from the story of the researchers involved and delve into the secrets of the shark they uncovered instead. And the secrets are fascinating. Shark fossils, shark senses, shark sex, shark behavior, shark attack (of course), threats to sharks and surprising data on shark intelligence are all presented in a book that breezes by too quickly. Well worth the price of admission!

She Flew No Flags
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (April, 1995)
Author: Joan Manley
Average review score:

A book for all ages.
Ten year old Janet Baylor is on a troopship (nicknamed the USS You Know Who) returning to the United States after living in India for 7 years. It is 1944 and the journey is dangerous because they are passing through enemy waters.

With her are her mother and father and her 2 brothers, Kevin (16) and Hugh (12). Her father is a doctor and her parents were medical missionaries in India.

Based on the author's true life story, we get an idea of what such a voyage was like. Because they are traveling through enemy waters, they have no lights or radio contact and must run a zigzag course to avoid torpedoes.

There is a stop in Australia where Italian POW's are transferred and hundreds of wounded are brought on board.

Janet and her brothers explore the ship and become friends with some of the crew and also with a beautiful woman named Ann Dobson who is fleeing India and who seems to take an unusual interest in Lee.

There are many new experiences in store for them during their 6 week voyage. They learn a lot about themselves and the world around them as some mysteries are solved.

Joan Manley also talks a little bit about their first impressions of America and the adjustments that had to be made.

This is another example of an enjoyable read (for anyone) from the young adult section.

Excellent book for pre-K through 3rd grade ocean life unit.
This book contains several projects that thematically integrate ocean life across the curriculum for pre-k through 3rd grade students. The projects help students experience the ocean life they are learning about. This should be a very helpful resource for teachers and student teachers planning a unit or theme on ocean life.

The Shipbuilder Volume 2 1907 - 1914 (The Shipbuilder)
Published in Hardcover by Blue Riband Pubns Inc (01 April, 1997)
Author: Mark D. Warren
Average review score:

A labor of love...A must read for the ocean liner enthusiast
The Distinguished Liners from the Shipbuilder, Volume 2: 1907-1914 represents the editor's years of experience, study and analysis of almost 7000 pages of the original shipping journal "The Shipbuilder." The book was compiled and edited by Mark D. Warren renowned maritime historian and author. In 314 pages of unsurpassed accuracy and attention to detail, Mr. Warren through Blue Riband Publications has painstakingly enhanced the original engineering, construction drawings and photographs of 53 ocean liners including my favorites; Britannic, Aquitania and Titanic to name a few. The amount of information in this book is mind-boggling. One could spend hours browsing through these pages, finding yourself transported back in time to a by-gone era.

This beautifully hand made reference book is produced on high quality acid-free archival paper enabling this fine work to last generations which represents a real bargain price and hope for the Leo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet groupies out there.

Lastly, Distinguished Liners from The Shipbuilder, Volume 2: 1907-1914 (as well as Volume 1: 1906-1914 which I also own) are in my opinon the finest reference work ever achieved on ocean liners.

Standing on tiptoe, Allegra kissed Justin.

Allegra jumped and turned toward Justin, her hand to her throat. You scared me to death."

"What are you doing?" Justin asked.

"Rinsing out my bikini."

"No, I mean, what are you doing out here, in the water, in the middle of the night?"

"I was hot." Allegra waded back to shore. She stood in front of him, topless. "What are you doing here?"

"I was looking---searching for you," Justin said uneasily. "Why are you over here on this side of the island?"

"So I could take off my suit and not worry about being seen," Allegra said. "I didn't expect to be followed."

"I'm sorry," he said. "I just---"

"Don't be sorry," Allegra said. She stepped nearer to him. Standing on tiptoe, Allegra kissed Justin. Over his shoulder, she could see the shadowy figure of Kate, her blond hair whipping back in the breeze, her face pale and dismayed even by moonlight.
